When Feeds Became Mirrors
Early experiments that showed both the problem and the potential of algorithmic design.
In 2017, MIT’s Laboratory for Social Machines released FlipFeed, a Chrome extension that let you “flip” your Twitter timeline and see someone else’s feed—often one from the opposite side of the political spectrum.
The goal wasn’t outrage. It was perspective.
Looking back, FlipFeed feels like a revealing early signal. Before TikTok’s For You page set the tone for nearly every feed, it demonstrated how a timeline could become a mirror: reflecting and reinforcing what a system believed someone wanted to see.
It also exposed a less visible truth. There is no single normal version of a platform. Each person’s experience is shaped by ranking, recommendation, and the people or sources they follow.
Seeing polarization made visible
FlipFeed let someone temporarily exchange their own Twitter timeline for another user’s view—a manual way of stepping outside an established feed.

Around the same period, The Wall Street Journal’s Blue Feed, Red Feed project offered a public view of the parallel realities Facebook’s ranking systems could produce.

Projects like these made polarization visible. They turned the effects of ranking and curation into something people could compare directly.
Smaller experiments followed a similar pattern: split the screen, show two feeds, and demonstrate how one subject could develop into sharply different narratives.

The early warning signs
These tools did more than visualize political polarization. They revealed something about the mechanics of feeds themselves: curation can gradually reinforce existing beliefs.
FlipFeed and Blue Feed, Red Feed appeared before TikTok’s For You page and Instagram’s Explore tab became dominant interaction models, but the underlying pattern was already visible—feedback loops increasingly optimized around identity as much as discovery.
At the same time, researchers and journalists were asking whether the systems that created echo chambers might also help people move beyond them.
FlipFeed suggested that interfaces could create moments of perspective-taking by making the assumptions behind a feed more visible.
Feed design could expose the forces shaping what people see—not only reinforce them.
